As we travel further into the 2024 legislative session, let’s take a moment to check out the graphs Palmetto State Watch released in 2023, breaking down the SC State Representatives self-reported conflicts of interest with state agencies. You may (or may not) be surprised to find out who recused himself from voting on the most budget items.

I can concede that a recusal from voting on a particular budget line item for a conflict of interest might not necessarily cloud one’s judgement, but when a Representative has dozens of stated conflicts, there’s got to be a point when enough is enough. When do they stop representing the people they’re elected to represent, and instead serve to further the interest of the government in which they’re so entrenched? And if they’re not able to vote on budget items due to said conflicts, wouldn’t it stand to reason there might be some bills these Representatives ought to recuse themselves from voting on as well for the same reasons?
